In between getting distracted by World War One and 6mm Trojans, I’ve been pushing on with completing some more units and heroes for the 28mm Trojan War project. Having finished off my army of Lucid Eye Amazons last summer, the goal is to get a small force of Achaeans to go up against them.
I’ve been fortunate in acquiring several lots of secondhand minis for the project so have a good stock of metal, mostly Foundry but including some Casting Room, Newline, Lucid Eye, Old Glory, Eureka and Redoubt as well! So I’ll be ending up with quite a mixed force, which suits me, as I like variety.
I finished off 24 Minoan style spearmen at the end of last year who I’m broadly envisaging as Greeks.
They’ve been colour-coded to an extent with red tunics and plumes and I’m rather pleased with the cow-hide shields, which I’m finding incredibly therapeutic to paint!
The latest batch has been 24 warriors that I’m planning to use as Achilles’ Myrmidons; I’ve gone with grey and black tunics to suggest an ‘ant man’ theme with a nod to the Troy movie.
Shields have a strong black/white cow-hide design to fit in with this.
The figures are less Minoan than the spearmen and more ‘heroic’, with a good smattering of armoured and sword-armed warriors to suggest their success in battle.
For Achilles, I’ve gone for the named Foundry miniature – I’m not convinced about him yet and may transfer him to a more heroic base in the future!
Patroclus is another Foundry model.
To screen the Myrmidons, I’ve painted up a couple of units of Foundry archers in the same colour scheme.
Ajax the Great was in one of the batches of secondhand Foundry minis that I acquired and he is a great sculpt – top work by the Perrys on that tower shield!
They look great

As inspirational as usual. I’ve been admiring those cowhide shields since you posted your Ethiopians a while back. Also, hats off on the positioning of the Amazons for your photoshoot. It’s a family show after all. 😉

What a throughly inspiring post, which made me trawl back through your other Trojan War project entries – wonderful! I love the way you’ve integrated the different manufacturers and used vibrant colours to bring it all to life. And your photography and posing is top notch too (the use of the smaller scale walls as background was particularly clever)
I’ve been hankering to do a Trojan War project, but my mate has a large collection at his fingertips so its hard to justify a new period – this was a fun big battle though:

I’d love to try something on a more sane scale – always thought that Mortal Gods would be a good option rules wise, with its emphasis on heroes. I’m hoping Footsore revive that game again (its been a bit neglected with their Baron’s War and Gang of Rome lines).
Again – an awesome post to showcase a most excellent collection!

Thank you very much! I enjoyed seeing your large LR Troy game as well on that link. Very impressive – I’m not quite aiming for that but might acquire some walls in 28mm sometime.
I’ve not played Mortal Gods but have played a fair bit of OGAM (Of Gods And Mortals) which is terrific fun for this kind of skirmish.

Man, these are sweet.
Just read the Iliad with my boys, and got Of Gods and Mortals. Do you know of any good minis for Greek gods? Foundry has some, but they are human-sized… I want them larger than life.

Hi Marc, we like large Greek Gods too…SHQ have a nice range (about 40mm) but they have been sold on to Grubby Tanks and I haven’t seen them re-advertised yet. Northstar have 54mm Zeus and Ares in their OGAM range. It’s worth hunting for tourist statuettes and through 54mm Greek ranges, both good sources for that unique mini. There’s some examples in my battle report here: https://mogsymakes.net/ogam-a-greek-mythic-battle-in-the-sacred-city/
