Preview: Battle of Lewes at Partizan 2026

Partizan 2026 is on May 17th (Newark, UK) and we’re going to be there with the Battle of Lewes! (alongside five other games of Lardy goodness in the Lard Zone).

I’ve always fancied gaming the Second Barons’ War and am pleased to report that it works very well with Midgard Heroic Battles (there’s a Goblet-Sized Campaign PDF in the works for 1264-65).

The scenario has had several run-throughs; chum Tom WD filmed the last game and you can see a nine-minute video report on YouTube. This is just a scaled-down version on a 6 x 4′ Geek Villain cloth – the version I’m working on for the show will be 12 x 5′ with more minis and scenery.

This project has been largely made possible by Paul Scrivens-Smith, who took it upon himself to paint around 500 28mm miniatures in the space of nine months. You can see Scrivs’ blog here to find out more!

An evening’s work from the desk of Scrivs 🙂

I’ve added a number of command vignettes, and Nick Gilmore has chipped in with some of his collection, but the bulk of the work has been down to Scrivs.

As ever with show preparation, the last few weeks have been a flurry of painting and modelling.

Fortunately the sunny weather arrived at the right time for me to make 20 feet of roads and to chop up polystyrene in order to create the slopes of the downs outside Lewes.

Scrivs has also bashed out a Warbases medieval carriage (used by Simon de Montfort to travel to the battlefield).

I’ve been working on a slightly converted Sarissa Precision post mill to represent Snelling’s Mill, where Richard of Cornwall took refuge after the battle.

The town wall of Lewes is a repurposed Helm’s Deep school project from 2002; it was facing the skip, so I have taken it on board and remodelled it into something more-or-less suitable for the 13th century.

If I get time, I’m also hoping to have figures to represent some of the characters from Ian Ross’s excellent novels about the Second Barons’ War, though I can’t guarantee that the paint will be dry!

Catch you there!
