Something to do with Brian Boru and the Battle of Clontarf looks like it could be a project for 2027/28, especially after the release of the 28mm Irish from Victrix Miniatures.

I’ve been assembling and painting some of the models from the kit, mixing in a few parts from the Vikings set to represent the adoption of Norse weapons and armour from the incomers in 10th/11th century Ireland.

They are very fine miniatures; I remember putting together the Republican Romans over a decade ago (back when they came in a box!) and you can see the improvements that have been made since then.

There’s a great array of parts and options but, importantly, a colour coded assembly leaflet is also now included.

This certainly speeded up the cutting and gluing process with its suggestions of which parts will fit with each model.

The level of detail in the kit is extraordinary – the faces, hair and scabbards (some of which have tooling and stitching visible) impressed me the most, I think.

Weapons have bulked out a bit since the early kits but are still realistically slender – they look amazing but we’ll have to see how they hold up to regular handling.

The poses are mostly very active, so I think I’ll be mixing in some of the Wargames Atlantic Irish bodies for some warriors to fill in the rear ranks.

Everything here has been painted with a mix of Games Workshop paints and regular acrylics over a white undercoat.

Shields are done by hand and all the backgrounds are from Jon Hodgson Backdrops.
The ship is an old 1/72 Smer kit that I put together ages ago; the lovely standing stones were from Monolith, but are now sadly out of production.
